Is It Safe to Take GLP-1s Like Ozempic While Breastfeeding?

GLP-1 is a hormone your gut releases after you eat, and it tells the pancreas to release insulin when blood sugar rises, slows how fast the stomach empties, and signals fullness to the brain. Drugs like Ozempic and Zepbound mimic that hormone, and they last far longer than the natural kind.

Pregnancy changes the same system. In the second half of pregnancy, the body becomes more insulin resistant on purpose, so more glucose reaches the baby.

For most women, this reverses after birth. For some it doesn’t, and that’s why gestational diabetes is such a strong warning sign for type 2 diabetes later in life.

In theory, the months after delivery are an ideal time to step in.

Breastfeeding is where the science gets thin. These drugs are large, protein-like molecules, so many experts expect very little would reach breast milk. But we have almost no human data to confirm that, and none of what appetite suppression means for a mother who is feeding a baby.

So, women are being prescribed these drugs in the middle of an unanswered question.

I wrote about this in this week’s Everything Connected, including who is missing from the data entirely. Link in the first comment 👇
